How do Food Preservatives and MSG's affect my health?

April 20, 2021

In this blog post, we will introduce the effects of preservatives and MSG on your health. One of the most common food additives is MSG, which has been linked to a variety of side effects including headaches, nausea, dizziness, weakness and chest pain. Preservatives are also unhealthy because they can potentially cause long term health issues.

MSG contains harmful chemicals that can cause serious, long-term negative side effects for your health

Many foods that are labeled as healthy contain dangerous chemicals.

MSG, or Monosodium Glutamate, is a so-called "food enhancer" - used to boost flavours. MSG contains harmful chemicals that can cause serious, long-term negative side effects for your health. Preservatives in food may be toxic to your body, but they're not necessarily required to be listed as such on the label of packaged goods. Even more reason to eat natural.

The dangers of preservatives and MSG's in food products have been well documented over the years, yet many companies continue to put these ingredients into their products without warning consumers about possible side effects or risks involved with consuming them.

Dinnerbox meals have zero MSG's or preservatives, as we recognise the associated risks to your health. MSG also doesn’t have to be declared when a food is not required to bear a label - like fast foods for example.

Better protect yourself from harmful chemicals like MSG and preservatives.

Look for words that end in "ose"

Words that end in "ose" - like Fructose, Sucrose and Glucose - are all forms of sugars and are high GI (Glycemic Index) additives. They include a lot of unnecessary calories.

4 grams of sugar is equal to 1 teaspoon

While 12 grams of sugar may not sound like much, would you eat 3 teaspoons of white sugar? Consider that up to ⅓ of a typical bottle of chutney is made up of sugars.

    Sodium Nitrites

These are found predominantly in meats and have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers.

  • 04

    Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHO's)

These are Trans Fats which are high in LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol. LDL's are strongly linked to compromised heart health by blocking arteries which can lead to heart attacks as well as strokes. Healthy foods higher in "good" fats, like avocados and nuts, contain HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol. An easy way to recall which is the good one is to remember the "H" in HDL's as "Healthy". You can also think of the "L" in LDL's as "Low" in health.

    Artificial Colourants

The more foods are enhanced with colour, the more processed these foods are. Colourants are typically found in foods like sweets, candy and soft drinks.

Again, you can rest assured that Dinnerbox meals do not contain any preservatives or MSG's at all. Happy dining!
